Gain Wisdom from God

Why study the Bible? I can think of many reasons, but because I am studying Proverbs, I naturally think of studying the Bible to gain wisdom from God. King Solomon, who wrote the book of Proverbs, was the wisest man that ever lived. When God appeared in a dream and asked Solomon what he wanted, Solomon asked for wisdom. Don’t you wish it were that easy to ask for something from God and get it? Solomon got what he asked for, and a lot more (1 Kings 3:5-14).

What is the difference between knowledge and wisdom? Knowledge is knowing the facts, but wisdom is knowing how to apply the facts to real life. The book of Proverbs is the guidebook on how to gain wisdom from God. That’s an excellent reason to study the Bible!

Here are some of my favorite verses from Proverbs.

“Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm” (Proverbs 13:20).

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do and he will show you which path to take” (Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT).
“For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding” (Proverbs 2:6 ESV).

Two resources for devotions and daily Bible study I recommend

Wisdom Hunters

Introducing one of my favorite fellow Christian bloggers who inspired me to start my blog. In 2013, when I felt God calling me to write, I found Wisdom Hunters. I enjoy this site because in 2004 Boyd Bailey started writing and emailing devotionals to his friends. Over time, Boyd’s site has grown to an email list of over 100,000 in 86 countries, an app, podcasts, videos and several books. This is from his website: “We are more convicted than ever to remain relentless in the pursuit of wisdom and continue to daily write raw, original, “real-time” reflections from our personal time with the Lord.”

Therefore, in 2013, I thought perhaps I could start out as Boyd Bailey did. So I emailed my early writings to friends and family, then posted them on our church singles group Facebook page. And now, in 2018, it was time to take the next step and start my blog. What plans does God have for me next?

First 5

Second, the First 5 app, available on Google Play and the App Store, is my favorite app of all time for daily devotions and Bible study. The name comes from the concept of spending the first five minutes of your day reading the Word of God. What a fantastic way to start your day! The current study is, you guessed it — the book of Proverbs. The app is free, but you can purchase a study guide here if you would like to. But you do not need to have the study guides to benefit from the studies.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I am grateful to Boyd Bailey for inspiring me to continue on my writing journey. Please sign up to get a daily email devotional from Wisdom Hunters by clicking here so that I will get credit for your sign-up in their Wisdom Hunters Ambassador Program. And don’t forget to download and install the First 5 app on your phone or tablet and try it.

Above all, do you want to gain wisdom from God? Ask for it. Jesus said we receive anything we ask for (Matthew 7:7).

Of course, there are conditions for this (Matthew 7:9-11). Otherwise, we make God into our own personal genie in a bottle who grants all our requests. God will always give us good things that are in His will if we ask in His Name (John 14:13-14). And wisdom, according to God’s Word, is always a good thing!
