Experience God’s Care in Your Season of Singleness

What is your most treasured possession? Your house, your car or perhaps some antiques or heirloom jewelry? Maybe it’s your spouse, children, grandchildren, or pets. However, I am confident that whatever or whomever you value most is well cared for.

In the same manner, we experience God’s care in our season of singleness (or any other lonely season of life) because we are God’s most treasured possession.

This is the last post of the series on four steps to rely on God’s promises during a season of singleness, or any lonely season. Read Part 1, Know God’s Love. Read Part 2, Belong to God and Part 3 Trust God’s Guidance.

We are God’s most treasured possession

I am all alone with no one to take care of me. Who will take care of me if I get sick? Who will take care of me when I get old and need help?

I have no husband or children. I worried no one would take care of me when I got older. Old and alone, with no one to help me. Poor pitiful me.

Now I realize from studying the Bible I am God’s most treasured possession. In fact, so are you! We experience God’s care when he watches over and cares for us. The world can be a scary place sometimes—just watch the news. But God’s eyes are on us. He never lets us out of his sight. In addition, he knows what we need and will supply it if we seek him first.

Moses spoke these words to the nation of Israel (and we are part of this because of what Jesus did for us), “For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. Out of all the peoples on the face of the earth, the Lord has chosen you to be his treasured possession” (Deuteronomy 14:2 NIV)

Therefore, God chose us. God treasures us. Furthermore, He created us in his image to love us and have a relationship with us. The Hebrew word for “his treasured possession” appears eight times in the Old Testament. In addition, it means a “special treasure, valued property, or jewel.” Therefore, we are the precious jewels of God.

Similarly, Isaiah spoke this to the people of Jerusalem: “You will be a crown of splendor in the Lord ’s hand, a royal diadem in the hand of your God” (Isaiah 62:3 NIV).

In particular, a crown is used figuratively in this verse to show honor and blessing. And a diadem is a turban or headdress adorned with jewels. Thus, we are honored royal jewels in the eyes of our God.

God watches over us

Because we are God’s treasured possession, we experience God’s care for us. He watches over us and protects us. His eyes are on us and he is always with us.

To illustrate, Psalm 121 is part of the Song of Ascents. Tradition tells us the Jews sang these psalms while traveling to Jerusalem. Psalm 121 is one of my favorite Psalms. Because it comforts me like a warm, cuddly blanket on a chilly evening. God’s love and protection surround me when I read it.

In Psalm 121, God promises to be our helper, protector, keeper, and guard. He never sleeps on the job. Why would we depend on anyone or anything else for protection when we have this assurance?

Finally, the last two verses summarize the promises, “The LORD will keep you from all harm — he will watch over your life; the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore” (Psalm 121:7-8).

In addition, Psalm 23, written by David, describes how God is with us through the darkest valleys of life, including the valley of loneliness, “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me” (Psalm 23:4).

Thoughtfully read Psalm 23 and comprehend the amazing love, care, guidance, and watchfulness of our Heavenly Father. When I read this psalm many years ago, it launched my journey back to God.

God provides what we need

Because we are God’s treasured possession, we experience God’s care when He provides what we need.

Jesus teaches us not to worry about our everyday needs, such as food and clothing, in Matthew 6:25-34. “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[?”

In addition, Jesus says in verse 33, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:33).

Above all else, seek the Kingdom of God and his righteousness. First. And not our righteousness, but God’s righteousness through faith in Jesus. Our needs are met. Undoubtedly, we will have trouble in this life (John 16:33). But God promises His loving care, because we are his treasured possession.

Summary

In conclusion, because we are God’s treasured possession, we experience God’s care in our lives. Not just in the seasons of loneliness, but always, now and forever. God is faithful—he keeps his promises. Seek Him first. Then rejoice in his watchful protection and loving care.
