Selectively choosing or referencing a verse without its full context can be risky. John 10:10 is featured prominently on my website. However, I didn’t consider the context of this verse and I’d like to make things clear. Who is the thief in John 10:10? What is the secret of abundant life?
Did Jesus suddenly appear as a newborn infant in the New Testament? No, the Old Testament is relevant today because the entire Bible is the story of Jesus. The story of Elisha shows us an imperfect foreshadow of Jesus. All other types and shadows fade away, but Jesus remains forever.
I inherited a precious gift from my daddy—his well-worn Bible. I treasure the underlined passages and notes in the New Testament, but found none in the Old Testament. I understand. The Old Testament can be difficult to read and often seems unrelated to our everyday life.
During tragedies, I wonder, if God is good, why do we suffer? Why does God allow these horrific things to happen? We cannot know all the reasons we suffer, but God’s Word supplies hope and comfort. We have the hope that suffering will end when Jesus comes back to claim the earth as His heavenly kingdom.
Have you ever tried to bargain with God? We can learn from the story of Jephthah in the Bible. We may be tempted to bargain with God but He keeps His promises, including the greatest promise of all, His Son, who offers forgiveness and eternal life for all who believe in Him.
